Hypnotherapy for IBS

Our ‘Hypnotherapy for IBS‘ programme can help you overcome the misery of IBS and take back control.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder where the bowel does not function as it should. Most people suffering with IBS experience some form of repeated abdominal bloating, tenderness, swelling and pain, often with intermittent diarrhoea and constipation, and an awareness of the bowel as it operates.

If you suffer with IBS you are not alone.

The NHS estimates that between 10 and 20 percent of the general population suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, though the true figure may be higher than this because it is thought that many people with IBS symptoms never seek medical advice.

IBS very common, but normally there is no obvious cause – or cure. It is thought the disorder sometimes develops after a gastrointestinal infection, sometimes due to increased sensitivity or intolerance to certain foods, sometimes due to exaggerated contractions of the muscles in the intestinal walls and sometimes during a period of emotional stress.

Traditional treatments for IBS include changes to diet, anti-spasmodic drugs, and muscle relaxants, though unfortunately, these treatments do not help everyone. If you have tried these and are still being controlled by your IBS, there is another option.

You do not have to suffer in silence or just “put up” with the misery of IBS.

Solid scientific research has demonstrated that hypnotherapy is a highly effective and safe option in alleviating IBS symptoms.

The bowel is thought by many evolutionary scientists to be a form of primitive emotional brain, as it contains many of the same receptors found in the brain. We instinctively know this and reflect it in our everyday language – for example, people often talk about having ‘gut feelings’, ‘gut instincts’, ‘gut reactions’, and strong emotions can be ‘gut wrenching’.

The mind–body connection is so powerful that your body can react physically to the way you think, feel and behave. Long periods of emotional stress or strong unresolved emotions like anger can be directed to the bowel, interfering with its ability to work properly. Ultimately, your state of mind can directly influence how you feel physically.

It is well documented that IBS symptoms worsen in stressful situations, and the NHS believes that up to 60 per cent of people with IBS have other psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety and even depression.

Hypnotherapy can help deal with stress and resolve physical ailments that have an emotional element to them. By working with your mind, you can often ease physical pain and tension in your body.

So, if you’re struggling with IBS and the stress, anxiety or depression that come from living with a chronic disorder, help yourself with hypnotherapy by reducing your stress, learning to relax, and resolving any negative thoughts, emotions or limiting beliefs which may be making your IBS symptoms worse.
